vandySometimes this whole wanting to be an artist thing is completely overwhelming. Trying to get a business going so that it doesn't loose money (yes, go buy more: www.historicworkshop.com ), working on building a house, trying to clean/organize the current one so it will some day not be a pit of doom, trying to make time to do physical therapy and actually exercise, and also doing ART. So I have been focusing on my goals. Here is a list:
Sketch EVERY DAY
Try to scan in sketches and put them somewhere, so when I loose my sketch books I have something to look at
Take good pictures of my work as it is completed (or scan it if applicable) and put them online
Finish at least one item a month. That is right, FINISH it.
Apply to at least one show/competition/gallery per month
By the end of Summer 2008 finish a large scale outdoor piece of art of suitable quality to enter in competitions/shows
Revamp my webpages
Improve my glass blowing enough, and get enough work together that I can have a good application together for Pilchuck TA-ing or at lest scholarships for Summer 2009.
I need to get my scanner working and then I will post pics of some of my latest sketches. In the mean time, here are some pics of goblets made a while ago for Jeremy and Lauren's wedding:
These are a starting place from which I hope to progress with some of my mixed media glass. They are big, thick, clunky, and now I really should be able to do a lot better (especially since we have our own shop so I can afford to toss stuff away and start over). I am working on designing a bunch of goblets, vases, ewers, and sculptural lighting that is all mixed glass and metal, plus maybe some wood for the lighting. These goblets are pewter and glass, but I am planning on doing finer work in silver and bronze, with more pieces of glass integrated into stems. Now I just need to go out to the glass shop and practice, practice, practice.
As for outside sculptural doom, sketchy sketch sketch until the weather in nicer. I plan on spending some quality time with the plasma cutter and welder once it warms up a bit. I was just drooling over the Pilchuck schedule and they have a class on planning and applying for public art commissions. It is not what I most want to take, but I sure could use the help. But until I have a few large scale works under my belt it is sort of pointless to worry about applying. And really, I would rather spend my gazillion dollars taking a glass blowing class rather than doing proposals for public art installations.
