I was feeling icky today...
Oct. 18th, 2006 01:15 amSo after realizing that my soldering was down to a snails pace and I was using any excuse I could think of to waste time I decided that I needed to get out of the house. I went over to my parents' place and spent the rest of the day picking apples and making cider. Woot! Now we have enough to start our cyser this weekend, freeze some more cider, and make some hard cider later. Mmmmm. The blend is pretty interesting this year - most years we end up with mostly gravenstines, but this year they ripened a LOT earlier, and while we have some frozen gravenstien juice to add to the mix, this pressing is a mix of some sort of vintage cider apple, a weird but tasty seedling red delicious mutant, winesaps, northern spys, and some variety of herloom russets. The first bunch we pressed was really perfumy and sort of overpoweringly sweet and syrupy, but when we got to the cider apples and red delicious they had a lot of tart and tanin and helped balance the mixture nicely.
