Glass Art Update
Apr. 15th, 2008 12:05 pmI registered Dad (
decomyn) and myself for the Glass Art Society conference yesterday, and also got us both our memberships. Yesterday was the last day to register before the price went up - go me!
I took some pics of a few of the glass items I have done recently, and actually uploaded them to flickr. One of these days I need to actually get a good backdrop set up and take some portfolio worthy shots, but I have a lot of cold-working to do before then. I have also been working on getting commissions and trades done. I have two of the 6 glasses for Anastasia done, and a bunch of practice pieces that I don't think are quite good enough for my claw beaker and palm cups trades/commissions. I almost feel practiced up, but I haven't done blown claws and that sort of windy bit work in a while, so it will be another session or so before I am doing them consistantly well. I also did one bowl for annie, but it looks like someone stuck some white powdered glass in with the fire red powdered glass (which looks white) so the whole thing turned out funky white/brown, and acted oddly. Sigh. So I need to order more enamel white powder and fire red powder. And some rod while I am at it.
I did get some new tools recently. I got the pipe-warmer kit from Joppa Glassworks. So now I just need to put it together, weld the frame, cut the fire brick to size... I am waiting on doing any more claw beakers until I have the pipe warmer done, because it takes forever to warm up all the punties in the gory hole before gathering for claws, and they need to be really hot, or else the glass gets too cold to do blown claws.
H also bought me a lion-head glass stamp from Spiral Arts. It is awesome, and I had fun using it this weekend. Now I just need one with a laurel wreath for SCA swag glasses. I started making a wax for one, but was totally unmotivated. Is there anyone else out there doing bronze casting who might be interested in making me a glass stamp? I have the lion head one as an example now.
I also got some leaf mashers off of ebay for $10 (including shipping!). They are all right, even though the lines could be a bit deeper, and it would be nice if they were on both sides rather than just one side. I am eventually going to make my own leaf and shell glass crimps in this style , which will work a bit better. But if I was going to buy them they would be between $100 and $200, so getting a slightly inferior product for $10 until I am motivated to make my own is just fine. Glass blowing tools are frikin' expensive.
H asked me what the next glass class I want to take is. I said goblet making or venetian work. He said I should do it. Yay! Now I just need to get someone to offer it. :-P Eugene Glass School did a Venetian Bootcamp back in February, so maybe they will do one again. Or maybe there will be enough interest for one of the other local shops to do it.
So what happened to my making bronze and glass goblets you may ask? Well, I still need to get set up to do some bronze casting. Sigh. One of these weekends instead of blowing glass I will work on bronze. Or when it is too hot this summer to blow glass I will do some middle of the night bronze casting, if I don't get to it before then. For now, I am at least improving my glass blowing skills.
And now for some pictures of projects:
