Our cat, Pip, is a hunter. Possibly not in the traditional sense of the word, since I have never seen him attack any living prey. But in the past, he has taken down bags of sour dough bread, vanquished grilled chicken breasts, and left offerings of freshly grilled steak (when we had not recently had steak) on our back deck. Today was apparently a day for new game. A few minutes ago I went to let him in from the back deck, because he was meowing loudly. He was situated under our umbrella awning, complaining about the rain, and noshing on a slice of pizza. Apparently the rain interrupted his dinner. Need I mention that we didn't have pizza today?

The image of this had me nearly falling out of my chair! Somewhere someone is missing a slice of pizza!

You are lucky...my Kitty Cat (named when I got her) only brings dead or almost dead things from the wild to my doorstep and sometimes she kills stuff in the house (a bird!) and leaves it for me in my bedroom.

Our dog is actually the one that deals with vermin... So maybe not that lucky? She generally takes care of the evidence though. I did grow up in a house with a cat who would drop mice into the bath tub so he could play with them at his leisure... talk about macabre - playing with the prey until they died of freight.

Maris' cat, Baka, does that (plays with them until they die of Mouse Failure.

But we think that's because she's not smart enough to know to kill them.

The whole dropping the mouse in the tub technique was passed down through 3 generations of cats at my mom's house. They didn't want to actually eat the mice of course. Mice are for playing, cans are what produce food...

When Ula was pregnant, her cat would bring her Extra Treats, since she was eating for two. After N was born, the cat waited a reasonable amount of time before teaching N to hunt --- that is, reasonable by cat standards, about 14 weeks.

After about three complete failures to interest baby N in stunned rodents, the cat gave up. I'm sure she was thinking that there was something wrong with the new kitten.

Hah! Now that is one I hadn't herd before. I am not sure if bringing her stunned chicken breasts and loaves of bread would have been better or worse though... imagine the mess pizza sauce would have caused... ;-)
