Self Pitty...

So I messed up my wrist a week ago Tuesday. Tried to ignore it, but do less with it. Went to juggling festival and didn't juggle much. Canceled climbing. Canceled climbing again this Tuesday and went to the doctor. Doc says I have two areas of inflammation in my wrist. One of them is minor carpal tunnel, the other inflammation is the real pain and it is in the side of my wrist and hurts when I pick up glasses, twist anything, brush my hair... I guess the beginnings of carpal tunnel is like my bonus for going in or something. :-P I am supposed to wear a brace on my wrist and not use it for two weeks and gave me a prescription for an anti-inflammatory steroid pack. So no climbing/fighting/juggling/glass blowing/acrobatics/anything else fun and exercise for me for another week and a half. Oh yeah, and I might consider learning to fight left-handed says the doc. Hmmm. In the mean time, I have been trying to get to the gym every day to do cardio and core stuff. So yesterday while changing I didn't put my wrist brace on first and managed to totally tweak my wrist again by merely catching it on my shirt. Gr. Ouch. I am a grumpy monkey.

I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel 20+ years ago. The doc wanted to opereate, but had me wear wrist braces to bed until the operation. The wrist braces helped so much I never went under the knife, which is good. I am very consistant about wearing them, but this is only to sleep in, and do fine the rest of the time.

Yeah, the carpal tunnel is pretty minor and the doc said it would probably be better once my other wrist issue healed up. We will see. My mom had surgery for it - ick. Right now I am way more concerned about the other injury which is the one that actually hurts. I only know about the carpal tunnel because I have tingling in my fingers when the doc tapped on the base of my wrist, not any pain.

Good about the only a small amount of carpal tunnel. I have potter friends who claim they avoid it by regular stretching. The surgery was less advanced when I was first diagnosed, which is why I was anxious to avoid it, I think they do a better job now and I hope your Mom got the more advanced surgery.

Also, good luck with your other wrist problem, may it fade completely and rapidly.

Take good care, wrist pain is totally sucky. I know how hard it is to do nothing using the wrists, and you are not a do nothing kind of gal! I have carpal tunnel, have had it for years. The right wrist got worse no matter what I tried in the way of remediation, and when I noticed the muscle atrophy beginning(which is the end stage of carpal tunnel)I had the surgery, 12 years ago. My wrist healed up with no problems, and is just as strong and functional as it was in my young adult years. Sounds like you are nowhere near being in bad shape as I was, and rest and recovery will come with time. I'm sending good healing thoughts your way...

Oh no! So many fun things on hold whilst you heal. Take extra special care of it and be certain that it is really *better* before you resume the climbing and juggling to avoid this problem again. If you know anyone who does reiki or other alternative energy based healing, it might be worth supplementing the rest & wrist brace with that--positive thoughts and energy can make a difference.

Sorry about the screwed up wrist. Trust me, take the time to let it heal right or it will just keep flaring up.
