My lj use has been decidedly erratic lately. So if you want me to know something, call me or email me plz - I am way too bogged down to catch up w/ all y'alls posts.

That being said, what the heck have I been up to? Well, art amongst other things! Here is a snippet from Sunday:

Looks cool! Pardon my ignorance but I'm guessing either a blast furnace or some kind of glasswork equipment

It's a furnace for melting bronze. My father has been teaching me propane burner construction 101 for the last couple of weeks. And it's very very warm actually! ;-)

Ooh, does this mean you're back in the shop? Sign me up. I'll email you and see if we can find some time to get together. K?

So what's the capacity on that furnace?

I think the crucible we have in there will do about 5 or 6 lbs of bronze. Not exactly sure - we used our own crucible the first time we fired it up, cracked it, and my dad ordered a couple crucibles on-line since we wanted to pour last weekend. I'm not sure which type of crucible he ended up getting. I think it is one of the A series ones from budget casting supply, maybe the A3. I may be making a larger furnace before too long though, we will see. While it is a pain to pour more bronze and we'd have to put together a more professional two-person set up with better protective clothing and stuff, it is also a lot of fun. And I do like casting larger stuff... I'll have to push the limits of what this one can do first though.

Do you do glass casting?

Bronze casting actually. Though I have helped ladle molten glass for someone doing glass casting before, and keep meaning to try doing some kiln casting with glass frit.

I don't know if I mentioned this, but in a former life, I was a jeweler. Before I became a stick jock.

I would like to try incorporating some cast glass into my work, but I don't do glass work and up to now haven't known anybody who did. I have some really cool ideas.

To see what someone else is doing with cast glass in jewelry, check this out:

Sweet! My dad used to be a professional jeweler and has his MFA in jewelry and metalwork, and I have sculpture and art history degree. We both blow glass, and do other lost wax casting, so keep talking about trying to do some lost wax glass casting. It's mostly getting off our butts and figuring out what mold materials we need, what frit we want to use, and what the firing schedule needs to be. I should really just take a workshop one of these days... Or get a book or something...

Neat pics! Obviously we will have to converse more upon the subject. :-)

I too have secret missions... ok, maybe not so secret. But secret enough that they shall not be discussed via lj. Involving replacing certain items of regalia however. ;-)
