Doesn't the grease create molten schrapnel when the molten bronze hits it? I have a great story about steam press molds we did in college I will tell you sometime.
No, it just fired up a little. The molds didn't really trap the grease, so no boom. Better yet, you can go watch our last pour since I stuck a video up on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvdH3UMlOBc OTOH my SCA brother had a very traumatic experience with pewter and water once...
We almost used a muffin tin, but I mentioned wishing for something thicker and voila! ;-) High-tech, yup. Sort of like the coffee can forge - a great thing. Actually, our melt furnace is surprisingly well engineered. But I wanted to make something *nice* and *finished looking* for a change.
Casting is pretty fun and easy. And since you have access to a torch you could already do small things... Eventually when we have the house done there will be neat come and geek out nights.

And I really need to learn me to cast the things.
