The Grand Thing
May. 27th, 2007 08:23 pmThe event was a blast! I planned on day tripping, then decided to spend Friday night so I wouldn't have to drive up in the morning, then ended up staying another night because I was having way too much fun. I was irresponsible, a horrid mooch, drank WAY too much, made a fool of myself, and generally enjoyed myself. Woot! The wind, yeah, that was a bit sucky, as was the lack of sleep, but who cares! Awesome event! Thanks to
young_raven for convincing me to go, hosting me in the yurt and feeing me! And thanks to everyone who fed me coffee and snaxz - my friends rock! I am so going back for more next year. Note to self: remember to pack hat and extra cloak. And bring lots of tent stakes and ear plugs just in case there is more wind o' doom next year. Thanks everyone for a fun time!
Going to the second windy event in a row has had one advantage - it is making me consider what prep and I might want to consider for our household camping set up before A&W. It is on the coast, so I think preparing for wind might be prudent. His Royal Highness had the bright idea that putting leather in between wooden ridge pole and supports might help eliminate creaking in the wind. Since I need to make new support poles for my tent anyway after crown set-up doom, I may just glue leather disks on top of the wood around the spikes. And I will put in longer spikes so I can use the finials I picked up. I am also determined to make my little period tent, hopefully before July Coronation. I am going to do a small wedge that will be fairly short and just large enough for my bedroll, my garb box, a basket, and my juggling bag. It is not like I don't have enough sunforger sitting in my garage! While the wall tent is great for Hank and me or for myself and a room mate, it would be nice to have a small alternative that could also serve as a medieval loaner tent. If I am really motivated, I could try to finish it by An Tir/West and lend it to Gwynnin and Lauren during their visit, since they won't have much stuff with them.
